Volunteer—Together, We Make a Difference
Volunteer at the YWCA You can help make a difference in the lives of women and their families, teenagers, and children by volunteering at the YWCA of Silicon Valley. The YWCA of Silicon Valley is comprised of dedicated staff members, local volunteers, and representatives from area communities. All are committed to the YWCA and its goals, and to providing our clients with the most comprehensive services possible.

Areas where volunteers are always needed include:

  • Event Committees
  • Family Services Department
  • Rape Crisis Center and Hotline
  • Our Child Care sites

VOLUNTEER FOR PROJECT INSPIRE’S AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM

What is Project Inspire? The goal of "Project Inspire" is to improve academic achievement and provide students with the opportunity to earn credit recovery within an after-school setting. It also provides a wide-range of services and activities to students enrolled within the East Side Union High-School District in order to build developmental assets.  The services include, but are not limited to:  Academic Assistance using the AVID Tutorial Model, Life Skills Enrichment Classes, Fitness, Mentorship, Self-Expression via The Arts, Field Trips, Leadership Development Opportunities and Service-Learning Project.

How can you volunteer? Be an East Side Heroes mentor or an AVID tutor at one of four different high schools on the east side of San Jose; Over felt, James Lick, Yerba Buena or Andrew Hill.  

What is AVID Advancement Via Individual Determination is an academic elective class which helps students complete their curriculum, and helps participants become responsible individuals in their society.  The tutorial model uses inquiry-based teaching and learning for effective student achievement.

What is the commitment?
Program runs Monday -Friday from *3-6pm.
From 3pm-4pm is Credit Recovery
From  4pm-5pm is tutorial using the AVID model
From 5pm-6pm is Life Skill Enrichment
*Minimum number of hours to commit is one hour per week.
*Hours may vary on school site.

IMPORTANT INSTURCTIONS REGARDING VOLUNTEER WORK

  1. Download and print the first 2 pages of the ESUHSD Volunteer Packet and print the YWCA Volunteer Packet
    Please complete the ESUHSD Volunteer Packet and YWCA Volunteer Application and drop it off to Carolina Avalos at the YWCA’s receptionist office. And pick up a TB test form from the receptionist after turning in both applications.
  2. Take your TB test:

    1. If you have worked with kids during the last 6 months, and have a current and cleared TB test verification. Then you do not need to re-do a TB test.
    2. However, if you have not worked with kids in the last 6 months, and do not have a current and cleared TB test verification within the last 30 days, then you need to re-do your TB test.
    3. To get your TB test, you can either go to: US Health Works or you can go to any other clinic, just bring in a receipt (not exceeding more than $38 dollars.)
  3. Fingerprints:
    BEFORE you call the East Side Union High School District to set up a fingerprints appointment, you need to have and bring the following information with you:

    1. Bring a valid ID,
    2. Verification of a recent and cleared TB test, and
    3. A completed ESUHSD Volunteer Packet which I would turn in as soon as you complete and turn in to me at the YWCA office.

  4. Attend Orientation:
    Before you begin volunteering, you must attend an orientation and one Friday training a month, which includes more information on the East Side Heroes Mentor and AVID tutorial training. Held at the YWCA office 375 S. Third Street San Jose, CA.
